How to study for a math test in 3 days

Three days out, the worst move is re-reading your notes. It feels productive, but recognising a worked example is not the same as being able to do it. The plan below spends almost all your time solving problems — and most of that on the problems you get wrong.

Day 1: Find what you actually can't do

  • List every topic the test covers (check the syllabus or ask your teacher).
  • Do 2–3 problems per topic without looking at notes.
  • Mark each problem: right, shaky, or wrong. Write down the exact step where you got stuck.

By the end of day 1 you should have a short list of misses — not topics like "quadratics", but specific steps like "forgot to set it equal to zero before factoring."

Day 2: Practice the misses

  • Start with your list from day 1. For each miss, study one worked example, then do three fresh problems.
  • Explain the step out loud as if teaching a friend. If you can't, you don't have it yet.
  • Revisit yesterday's wrong problems at the end of the day and redo them from scratch.

Day 3: Test yourself, then rest

  • Do a mixed practice set under a timer — topics shuffled, like the real test.
  • Check every answer and redo anything you missed one more time.
  • Stop early and sleep. Tired practice the night before usually costs more than it gains.
