How to use AI for homework without cheating

Copying an AI answer gets the homework done and teaches you nothing — and your teacher's rules may forbid it. But AI can also be a patient tutor that asks you questions until you get it. The difference is how you use it. Always follow your school's and teacher's rules first.

1. Try it before you ask

Attempt the problem first, even badly. Then ask about the exact step where you got stuck, not for the whole answer.

2. Ask for a hint, not the answer

Ask things like "What should I do first?" or "Is my second step right?" A good tutor asks you questions back instead of handing over the solution.

3. Explain it back

When you think you've got it, explain the method in your own words. If you can't, you've borrowed the answer, not learned it.

4. Do a similar problem alone

Change the numbers and solve it with no help. That's the real check that you can do it on the test.

5. Write essays yourself

Use AI to question your thesis or check whether your evidence supports it — not to write paragraphs you hand in. Your argument should be yours.
