What AI is, and what it isn't

    • A chatbot predicts likely words from patterns in huge amounts of text. It doesn't look things up the way a library does, and it doesn't 'know' things the way a person does.
    • It can sound sure of itself and still be wrong. Confident tone is not evidence.
    • It has no feelings, memories of you, or opinions of its own, even when it writes as if it does.

    Quick check

A chatbot sounds very sure of its answer. That tells you…
A chatbot says it missed you. What's true?

When to ask AI, and when to think first

    • Your brain gets stronger from effort. If AI does the hard part, you skip the part that makes you learn.
    • Try the problem first. Then ask for a hint, a check of your work, or an explanation of the step you're stuck on, not the final answer.
    • Good uses: explaining a concept another way, quizzing you, checking your reasoning. Poor uses: writing the essay for you, answering a test you're meant to take yourself.

    Quick check

Stuck on homework, the best first step is…
Which study use of AI helps you remember most?
  3. Lesson 3 · 5 min

    Checking AI answers

    • AI can invent facts, quotes, numbers and sources that look real. This is often called 'hallucination'.
    • Check important claims against a trusted source: a textbook, an official website, or a teacher.
    • Ask: Can I find this somewhere else? Does the source actually exist? Does the math work when I redo it?

    Quick check

    An AI 'hallucination' is…
AI names a book as its source. You should…
  4. Lesson 4 · 4 min

    Privacy and safety

    • Don't share passwords, your home address, ID numbers, health details or other people's private information with a chatbot.
    • What you type may be stored or reviewed. Treat it like a message that others could read.
    • AI is not a friend, doctor, lawyer or therapist. For anything serious, talk to a trusted adult or a professional.

    Quick check

Which is safe to type into a chatbot?
For something serious, like feeling low for weeks, talk to…
  5. Lesson 5 · 4 min

    Fairness and bias

    • AI learns from human writing, so it can repeat human stereotypes and unfair assumptions.
    • Images, voices and videos can be faked. Check where media came from before you believe or share it.
    • Notice when an answer leaves people out or treats a group unfairly, and question it.

    Quick check

    AI can repeat stereotypes because…
A shocking celebrity video goes viral. First…
  6. Lesson 6 · 4 min

    Using AI honestly

    • Follow your school's or workplace's rules about AI. When unsure, ask.
    • Say when you used AI, and how. Passing off AI work as your own is dishonest.
    • You are responsible for anything you submit or share, even if AI helped write it.

    Quick check

Your teacher bans AI on an essay. You…
Who's responsible for mistakes in work you submit?
